Since 1991, we have been conducting health education and leprosy awareness classes among school children with our flip chart and slide shows after getting necessary permission from the concerned Chief Education Officer/District Education Officer of the District. During the course of conducting awareness classes, we detected new (fresh) leprosy cases among the school children. Every month we conducted a leprosy clinic at the Grace Kennet Hospital till 1995. In 1996, we opened Mahelerecen Leprosy Centre with lab facility at Vilangudy, Madurai. Regularly, we conducted leprosy treatment in different areas of Madurai and Dindigul Districts. We also detected fresh cases of leprosy through skin check ups among the school children. Those students who were identified with leprosy patches were treated with Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) treatment. In 1999, we had also started Community Based Rehabilitation Activities (Income generating self employment) for our leprosy deformed patients. Under this activity, 74 patients benefited. In 2016, in collaboration with ‘Madurai Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute’ we conducted medical camps in our Centre in Chellaiah Nagar for leprosy affected people.
